Phuntsholing Thunders plundered and devastated by Takin City in their first encounter
Phuntsholing Thunders cricket team is a new addition to the BCCB T20 Cup 2018 and all the people residing in Thimphu and rest of the teams participating in the Cup expected the team to be full of high caliber in and around their team with few Indians playing from their side. And Takin City with huge experience under their belt, was found shaky before the match even started. However, it turned out to be a different story at the end of the match.
It was a beautiful afternoon, with sun out after a long week of rain and the teams looked great with their new jerseys out and flashing. Toss was won by Takin City and opted to bat first. It was a surprise for many when Takin City was seen to be led by a new captain, Sanjeevan Raj Gurung, with former captain Sonam Tobgay now playing the only role of a player in the team this time.
Tandin Wangchuk, making a debut for Takin City, and Manoj Adhikari, who used to bat lower down in their previous tournaments were taking their guards to open the bat for Takin City. Tandin Wanghuck, who is known for his big hitting did not have the luck as he would have wanted and was out for 15. His opening partner Manoj shared a similar hard luck, losing his wicket for 8 runs leaving the team in a bit of a trouble. Next batsman walked in and it was Biswadeep, one of their overseas.
However, he was trapped leg before in the very first delivery from Indra Bahadur, leaving the team in a more troubled situation. Then came Nausheed and Sanjeevan to the crease and started to steer their team total. These two batsmen shared a valuable partnership of 48 runs before captain Sanjeevan got out bowled for 23 by Bijay. Phuntsholing Thunders, from their first deliver, started asking questions to Takin City’s batsmen and took wickets in a regular interval. With 3 early wickets and now, the captain’s wicket,
Phunstholing Thunders were looking to find an upper hand. Nausheed and the rest of their batsmen were left to, at least score a decent total so that they can defend later with their bowling arsenal.
Somebody had to, and it was none other than Nausheed who took the responsibility and led the scoring of runs in his own hand, answering every bowler’s questions with boundaries.
Nausheed ended up helping the team set a target of 188 runs in 19.5 overs with some valuable runs of 30 chipped in from Raj Kumar. Ajay Pradhan and Dupthop Wangdi from Phuntsholing Thunders took 2 wickets each and were among the best bowlers from their side.
Phunstholing Thunders thought the target was chasable and wanted to start well. As many have expected the Thunders to have some thundering cricket shots with the presence of Indians in their side, it was a different story all together at the end.
They lost 2 quick wickets in the first over bowled by Nausheed and rest of the wickets kept on falling in a regular interval. Thunders scored a disastrous total of the tournament – 20/10 in 7.2 overs; Indra Bahadur, Chojay Wangchuk, and Chimmay Mondal scoring 4 runs each for their side.
It might be the lowest total scored by any team in the history of BCCB T20 Cup. Nausheed, now with the ball, took 3 wickets conceding only 3 runs in his 3-over spell. Thukten and Tandin Wanghchuk took 3 wickets each to help the team finish up the game. If Phuntsholing Thunders do not improve on their batting, it’s going to be a difficult tournament for them.
Tashi Cell Man of the Match was awarded to Nausheed from Takin City for scoring a blistering 81 runs off 37 balls and taking 3/3 in his 3 over spell.
