If Bhutan has to defend 102 runs, Bhutan will and has done it. And if Bhutan has to defend even 89 runs, Bhutan can, despite who the opponent is. Bhutan Women’s Cricket team played their first game of the ongoing tournament and that too against a team (Hongkong) that is going to play a World Cup qualifiers soon.
Hongkong team is lead by an experienced player Mariko Hill, who has played a lot of international tournaments for Hongkong and even for clubs around the world. With so much experience under her belt, Bhutan team knew she was a threat as she took early wickets against Bhutan in today’s game. However, despite all the odds against our women’s team, Bhutan have pulled off a great winning performance against Hongkong today in which the game went till the last over. With the toss won and opting to bat first, Bhutan managed to set a target of 89 runs in 20 overs. Captain Dechen Wangmo and Tshering Zangmo amounted 33 runs for the team with 35 runs coming as extras, helping to reach 88 runs in total.
With that target, Bhutan had to pull up their sleeves and get their minds and skills together to defend such a total and that was what our women’s team exactly did. Bowling and fielding department had a huge responsibility to control the run rate of Hongkong’s; more dot balls, less extras, and save runs for target was low to defend. Going back to the game, whoever Captain gave the ball to, they delivered will brilliant economy and most importantly, wickets kept falling to add more pressure for the opponents. In the final phase of the game, when Hongkong needed 18 runs of 18 balls, Devika Darjee, the cool headed bowler for Bhutan bowled the 18th over and turned out to be a maiden over with one run-out coming from the over. It was all about building a pressure on your opponent, which Bhutan did and had an upper edge in the final over. 14 runs needed of the final over with only a wicket left for Hongkong to rely on, Bhutan only had to not give any boundaries or take the final wicket and the game was ours. Bhutan won an exciting game by 9 runs against Hongkong. This is the first ever win for Bhutan Women’s team against Hongkong Women’s team in the senior category.
Although we have won against Hongkong twice in the Under-19 age category. The player of the match was awarded to none other than debutant Tshering Zangmo for her valuable 15 runs with bat and taking two wickets in 4 overs giving only 16 runs. Tshering Zangmo thanked her coach and teammates for believing in her and is happy for her achievement in her first every international match.
Coach Sonam Tobgay stated, “this will serve as a stepping stone and that this win will give so much confidence and boost to the team for all the matches ahead.” Coach added that he noticed seriousness within the team to perform better in every given situation and thinks that with such attitude, we can achieve even better results in the games ahead.
Captain Dechen mentioned that we are no more an underdog team and applying our minds in the game time as per our coach’s direction helped us perform well today. Today’s win against Hongkong gave me hope to win the tournament. Bhutan will be meeting Indonesia in their next encounter on 8th March.
